Anyone else have to replace their trunk latch?

I was so lucky. Mine decided to sound like this when I hit the remote:

Yep, totally like an A-10 gatling gun. I'm supposing the gears in the thing are stripped, likely the same ol' nylon gears...

So I ordered and got the new trunk latch (which contains the actuator, and connector to the trunk lock cylinder, and the glow-in-the-dark handle) and swapped it with the stripped gear one. Took all of 10 minutes and is self aligning. Trunk really sounds better too, go figure, when it's closed and when it opens (and not because the grinding noise is gone, just... I dunno. Perhaps the latch is tighter or something.

Just thought I'd tell story on that. Laters!

Come to think of it, I could probably count on my hands the number of times I've opened the trunk in this car, and I don't recall ever using the trunk release button inside before.

Oh, I don't have one of those. I was talkin' about the one on my fob.

Also got in the trunk popper springs, the old one's rubber tips had come apart. Trunk opens and closes really nice and quiet now. Happy camper am I!

I think they must have changed the latch somehow, though, because I swear it's quieter, and less... 'bangy', I guess is a close enough word... and it sorta opens and closes with a smoother, more solid feel/sound.

Do it, it's a three nut, two connector swap out, takes all of 5 minutes to do it, and man, it's just so nice to not be sounding like a jackhammer.

I had to replace the trunk latch mechanism on our 2006 about 4 years ago. The original just wore out and quit working, like yours. Cost about $70 for the part.

Just replaced mine last month. Cost me $120 CDN. Why do we always get ripped off.

***More A-10 gatling gun sounds***:P

Let's see. 2007 to 2013. That's 6 model years. 120/6 is $20 per year. I wouldn't say that's a bad deal, even CDN, although in comparison to a non-actuator-integrated latch, yeah, that blows, seeing how they'd last 30 years...

Funny, because I did the same thing when I bought it. Just as a reference it broke last year in October and I was doing it old school to open the trunk. I disconnected the power to prevent the machine gun sound.

I've been dealing with this issue in my 2006 for the last couple of years. I thought it was the latch, so I snagged a latch from a wrecked car... but the problem persisted. At that point, I assumed that I had some sort of wires crossed somewhere, and wasn't looking forward to tracing an electrical gremlin.

However, after reading this post I finally made it to the dealer to grab a new trunk latch yesterday. Replaced it and BINGO.... problem gone. (apparently the used one I snagged also had the same problem).

It is so nice not to hear that awful noise when I open the trunk now.

How do I get the black plastic cover that prevents me from getting to the trunk latch off?

You just pry it off. It's held in place with clips.

At least, mine is, a 2006. I'm thinkin' all 2005-2009 are the same.

Here, watch this:

Either alignment issues or it's a bad latch out of the box. But the latch box is self aligning, so unless there's something really wrong... which is why I think it's a bad latch.

Or you've tripped the latch and it's closed. You might need to open it. Hit the button or use the key to flick it back open so it'll latch.

Maybe this will help: http://iihs.net/fsm/?dir=466&viewfil...id%20Latch.pdf

Good luck!

There are days in traffic where I wish I had that 30mm gun mounted in my car. Or photon torpedoes. Fire torpedoes, maximum yield, full spread!

Figured it out. The manual release line wasn't threaded through right, so it was in an always release mode. Retreaded through the trim piece it and it did the trick. Truck is like new!

RE: trunk latch problem

I have a 2012 GT/CS convertible. The "trunk ajar": warning is on even though the trunk is closed. Tried adjusting, to no avail. Ford dealer want $350.00 to repair/replace. Anyone else have a similar problem?

Been looking for part or parts to do the repair.
