looking over the SCCA pages, the parking lot full of cones might not be anywhere near the fun of thrashing about a track, but think it might be a better way to test the waters a bit...and learn a lot more about the car and my own limits in a fairly safe and legal way...
So, any scca autocross guys in here? just looking for opinions on if you get many chances to get out often, and if tracks are ever set up allowing you to really use your car's horsepower/get past second gear...are turns wide enough for a strong rear wheel drive car to oversteer around, or is it more a fast 'maneuverability course'...I knew a guy that scca raced a festiva, surely not very fast, but if tracks too tight, nothing would be...cranking the wheel thru 15-20 mph hairpin turns might be fun for a lap or so, but I'm hoping they get some faster/sweeping(oversteerable) turns too...

I dont know whats wrong with me, but I just want to try and destroy those pirellis
thanks for any info

Yes

I hope you've been having fun

having fun? heck even the drive to the gas stations fun :)

I havent had any autocross fun yet- have never even seen one. Heard about a couple groups in the area to check into- hopefully soon.

if youre in scca, how did you go about joining up, and how often do you get track time?

Have fun. I tried to melt my Pirellis last season at 6-8 events, but they wear surprisingly well. Still using them as my street tire.

I only autocross right now until I get another daily driver. I joined the SCCA at an autocross event a few weeks ago. I've done a divisional since then and had a blast.

We usually autocross at least once a month.

Go to SCCA.com and choose an area near you. It will link you to the local group that runs events. I found the Sacramento chapter that way and joined late last year. They run 1 or 2 Solo events a month, however if you think you'll get out of second I doubt it. Most of the time you can get the RPM fairly high, maybe 5,000 to 5,500 but you'll be in a turn by then. It is fun and a great way to see how the car handles opposed to a straight line. You have to have tires though, I consistently come in 3rd or lower against other Mustangs or Camaros with autocross tires. Just need an extra $800 to $1,000 and I'm back in the game.

What is it like particpiating in an autocross as far as standing around and waiting til your run? They look fun but I worry about standing around for like 5 hours and getting a few one minute runs.

Yes it is a lot of standing around and working the course for the few runs but it is also the cheapest and easiest way to test your all around driving skills against other drivers and to push your car to the limit.

Every time I get out of my car after a run I'm shaking and weak kneed it's a great adrenaline rush.

Well that helps- I didnt realize how fun it would be. How long is an avg Autocross run?

It depends on the size of the site anywhere from 30 to 90 seconds.

It's not always just going to be standing around. Once you start meeting the other drivers, it becomes a social event. We help each other get our cars setup, talk about the track, how we're going to drive it, etc. The women go talk about....whatever they talk about. We all meet up and go out to dinner after the Sat. event, stay at the same motel if coming from a distance.
