All Shaker Systems Bad?
#21
Also want to mention I did some more testing today. I tried some Maxell cd's and verbatim. The head unit reads the discs 1 thru 6. I then tell it to load disc 2...takes a few minutes and says bad disc and ejects it. Then it goes to disc 3, bad disc ejects it. Then on to 4,5,6, then 1. All are bad and ejected. I reload them and it works. I then tell it to select a cd it previously played.....bad disc.
I just made 6 regular cd's (instead of mp3) and will try them tomorrow.

No problems at all with my shaker 500...I have 30 or so cd's full of MP3's, all from various manufacturers and I have not had one issue. It even plays cd's that my RSX-S 6 disc in dash changer would not read.
Ths is one of the highest quality factory systems on the market today, I am not changing a thing. Don't worry about it.

worked for 2 weeks. it read commercial cd's, and my burnt cd with mp3. now it says bad disc, and spits it out like candies on Lucy's conveyor belt (how's that for a dated reference - - let's do a poll on who knows what I am talking about). My dealer has ordered a replacement unit.

I ordered the 1000 and hope it will be "one of the highest quality factory systems on the market today" (though I do feel a bit suspicious trusting a donkey...)

I've had my '05 with a Shaker 500 for a month now (hard to believe), and it has had 6 fully loaded MP3 disks in it since the second day. I have not had any rejected disks. I did have one case where it stopped in the middle of a song and skipped to the next one, and one case where the entire stereo "locked up" until I turned off the ignition and restarted the car. The last thing was worrisome - there was no sound and the stereo would not respond to any controls, including the power switch. It has not had a problem since.

I had problems playing cd-rw's on my x-terra's head unit. Then I tried regular cd-r's and had no problems. So check and make sure it's not a rewritable disc.

 hmm all this talk is making me uneasy about ordering a shaker 1000 n the future (my parents said they would seriously consider it if i get straight A's). i was hoping for all options except wheels and auto tranny, but this is making me wonder.... then the not so rational part of me (the part that once famously uttered, "c'mon, how bad could it taste its only been there for what, a month?") syas, fugedaboudit, it'll be fine. i hate indecision

There really isin't a choice there that fits my experience so far. I have only had my car for a few hours now so I'll wait a few days to vote. So far I have stuck about ten CD's in and only had one rejected(burt music). I reinserted it twice and it finally took it so I don't know what to say. Shaker 500 sounds great though!

I found out real quick my shaker 500 doesn't like the "stones". Skips songs and then forwards discs. Figured I would be seeing the dealer, but the two discs ($55) are the only ones I've had a problem with. The system has worked great ever since and the sound quality is excellant IMO.

Does the Shaker 500 have the automatic volume adjustment feature? As speed increases the volume increases? I love that feature in my 02!

Well I'm 3 weeks away from delivery, and for what it's worth to maybe alleviate some concerns I do have 2 MP3/CD decks in other vehicles. One is a Pioneer, and the other a Sony. They're not changer units, but they do play MP3's and burned CD-R's. Neither one will play CDRW. The Pioneer is a little more finicky, and seems to work realiably with TDK CD's. The Sony is less finicky but has spit out some MP3 CD's on occasion. Something else I have found that has affected performance is when burning CD's (either MP3 or Standard) do not have ANYTHING else running in the background. It seems like everytime I'm at work burning a CD while I'm working with multiple apps open, I'll go to my truck and somewhere along the line in playback it will start skipping like crazy and just quit playing altogether. If while burning a CD, it's the only app running, I have no problem. Both decks exhibit this behavior, and the ironic thing is these CD's play fine in anything else.
The point to all this is that there seems to be some inherent "flakyness" when it comes to MP3/CD players and changers.
But.....if you exhibit a problem regularly... Take it BACK!!! and have the dealer swap out the deck.

I voted works great, but I have one alibi. I had a disk eject after being declared a Bad Disc. Nervously I reinserted it, and have had no further problems.
The solution for the subfolder people is to download a free copy of iTunes at www.apple.com It really is the best player, has access to the Music Store, and most importantly, can burn regular CDs from MP3s, or MP3 CDs.

most stock systems will do that, if your really worried about it, keep the stock amps and speakers, and just upgrade the head unit. For a couple hudred bucks(canadian) you can have a really nice unit, that will hardly ever skip. aftermarkets are made to play burnt cd's as well as MP3's, when compatible.
