Lately I've been getting somewhat of a whining sound from my normally aspirated 4.6 engine. It does not have to be at high revs either. I'm sure it's not the trans or rear. Maybe some sort of vacuum problem somewhere? I'm thinking it may be related to another noise I sometimes get for a few seconds after I start the car. That sound is a rather loud hum/tone/whine/vacuum sound and only lasts 10 seconds at the most, and it only happens once in a while (less than once a month). Any ideas? I have no major mods on the car, just a K&N airfilter.

Thanks for any help,
Tony

is it a whistle or sound like a bearing?

You know what, I have the same sound but on my V6 -- it only happens if I start the car and don't hit the gas (say I get out of the car right after starting it).

It whines more like the belt is whining, but it stops immediately when I hit the gas and drive. It doesn't come back unless I start the car from a cold start and again, only if no gas is applied. Odd, to say the least

It's hard to describe, the best I can say is it is a whining sound that changes with the speed of the engine. I don't think it could be a bearing. I only have 18,000 miles and I don't drive it that hard.

I knew someone else had to have that weird sound on startup sometimes. I almost never get it, but was just wondering. And when it does happen it goes away so quick that you don't have a chance to open the hood and find out exactly where it is coming from. Maybe it is a belt.

The 2 sounds probably aren't related no that I think of it. I've been getting the startup sound for a lot longer than the whining sound.

The wife's 04 Mustang has an anoying wining sound from the power steering, and you don't have to turn the wheel to hear it. when I questioned a few ford owners, they informed me it was just the way ford designed them, and it was on all ford vehicles. :dunno:

I have that same problem with my 2000 GT. I also have a knocking noise, like a bearing goin' on too. But it's all about to be taken care of.. 302 stroker this weekend!

But as far as the stock 4.6 goes, I hate them.. 60K miles and mine is going down the crapper on me...

I wish my Mach 1 did! :-D

Seriously though, I wonder if it may be the power steering pump. I know Ford made weak ones in the past. (I'm on my 3rd one in the Saleen).
