2nd Gear Resistance / Mild Grind
Had an all around bad day the other day... Hardcore 2nd Gear Miss Shift while racing a Z28... And then later in the day, I burned out my clutch while doing 2nd gear donuts. My 02' GT still drives... But the clutch is definitely shot. Now, there are many times when I try and put it into second gear... I can feel mild grinding. I'd like to chalk it up to being a bad clutch.... But 1st and reverse gear do not grind. Any thoughts? Is it time for a new transmission? New gears? Or will the New clutch possible solve my problem?

I would start off with a clutch Im all most positive that will fix 2nd gear problem

Do you notice the grinding to second more or less while going from 1st to second or while down gearing from 3rd.

I agree with Tommy d start with the clutch ( you need one anyways) a worn clutch is going to make getting it into gear hard. There is a chance you hurt the syncro/gear but only slightly if haven't done this many times ;), my advice if you are going to row the gears hard get an after market shifter ( 1st choice MGW, 2nd choice Steeda ) more positive shifts than the stocker and adjustable shift stops which the stock shifter doesn't have.
you can also take a quick look in the "fox section" in our tech articles there is a clutch cable "how to" and the proper way to adjust the clutch, this works on your year also. |
Change the clutch, if you are positive its bad. If it keeps grinding/being hard to shift, then next step is a clutch cable. If you havent replaced it in a while its probably stretched.

Cars have bad 2nd and 3rd syncros you make it sound like you were beating on it so I wouldn't be surprised if you toasted them but start with the clutch. Also put your you're under the pedal and pull up to see if you get a click of the adjuster first.

If it were your clutch you would have gear clash in every gear being just second and third or whatever it is just a synchro

Thanks all! The clutch should be replaced by tomorrow... So I will find out then. I will post the results so people with similar issues may be able to put their minds at ease.
