My Mustang started sounding like it was vibrating or knocking kind of hard at around 2000rpm and on shifts. It suddenly got really bad on the way to the dealer and sounded like a bolt was jumping around inside.

The dealer took a look and basically told me I would need a factory refurbished engine (3 yr, 36,000mi) longblock.

I ask what specifically was the problem, and he was not able to tell me. He said they would have to open it up, but thought is may be a main bearing or a rod. I asked them to send me a detail on what was looked at and what was advised. I am awaiting that email.

They are talking about $2200.00 labor and $3300.00 for the engine.

I need help on what to do please. In San Diego by the way.

That engine must have been abused for those 36k miles!!

My advise is to write to Ford head office and complain that an engine this age and mileage shoul not be suffering major mechanical failure. Start questioning your future goodwill, and word of mouth etc. Any manufacturer should be worried about a failure at that age......

The engine has 90,000 mi on it. The 3yr 36k refers to the warranty on the new one. So far I am down to $900.00 labor from another mechanic.

Why not put in a terminator engine? Im not sure what the price difference is, but a cobra powerplant would be worth an extra $2k to me.

The thought crossed by mind, I am guessing there is more to it than that. The costs I am talking about are just the longblock.

That would be a good chance for an awesome project car.

Right but my concern is really a good deal right now. I am not in the financial situation to upgrade anything. I would consider forged internals if the motor was getting opened, but it seems to end up costing more to open it up than to just replace it. I really just need my car running, regardless of how bad I'd like to toss a Cobra engine in it.

shop around and see what kind of prices you can get from other companys for stock long blocks. check with latemodel mustang resto also. they get all kinds of good used and new parts in for good prices. man, ford wanted 2200 bucks to unbolt a motor and bolt the other one up??? thats crazy!

believe it or not i remember pep boys carry`s long block and autozone also u should check them out... or try jasper engines....

You might want to try Kar Kraft. They have lots of Ford engines; shortblocks, longblocks and complete engines.
