Removing Ac?

i met up with another fox owener today, and as we were inspecting each others cars he asked me why i still have my ac... He then explained that removing the ac along with the belt and pulley and what-not(the whole ac shabang) will give me a 35hp boost...

Now ive never heard of this before so can some one steer me in the right direction? Can ne one help me out? Id like to remove my ac ne ways seeing as how i never use it due to the fact that my driving alone wastes enough gas(100$+ per week), but id really like to know what i will gain by doing that...

Thanks in advance!

Maybe he ment 3-5rwhp...

GT-Jim 7/12/06 11:12 PM

mmm really... 3-5? sheesh thats a big diff from 35... Ne ways, so then at least it gives a little horse power boost right? is 3-5 rwhp accurate?

I believe so... I'm pretty sure I read something about someone getting about that much, maybe a few more.

Still better than nothing, though.

it sure won't free up anywhere near 35hp, but it does also take some weight off the front end because besides the compressor, you also take out the accumulator, condenser, and all the A/C lines and such.

One thing I've noticed when talking with other car enthusiasts is that people will BS you a lot whether they are actually trying to or just plain ignorant. When talking cars with someone, take everything with a grain of salt, and always find other sources like you did here.

alright thanks guys i appreciate it... 35 horse power or not the ac is coming out... some reduced weight and that 3-5hp gain sounds pretty neat so why not :)

you wont feel the hp difference, but hey man its your choice.

You should have had your hip waders on because that was some deep poo he was giving you!

There is NO....repeat NO HP increase from removing your A/C!!! The A/C compressor is just an idler and has NO drag when not in use....and even IF the A/C is on there is a full throttle circuit that turns off the A/C under full throttle....meaning again that there is no HP loss from keeping it. Try it...drive with your A/C on and then mash the pedal...you will feel that the air suddenly blows warm....that is because the system just shut off the compressor ;)

The weight you lose will be insignificant unless you are competetively road racing and the only thing you will accomplish is making your car worth less down the road to a potential buyer should you decide to sell it.

This is a myth and one that has ruined many cars because people tossed the A/C and "thought" they gained power when in reality they did not.
