I know it's the answer that you don't want to hear, but there is no single 'best' exhaust. Every exhaust sounds different. H-pipes and X-pipes have different sounds, and the mufflers that you put on them will change the total amount of sound that come out as well as individual sounds: ie. I've heard people say that Flowmasters have a very 'tinny' sound to them. Your headers will also play a pretty vital role in how your car sounds. I've heard a lot of really good things about Borla, MAC, Bassani, and Dr. Gas. This site might help you a bit if you're looking for a particular sound:

And if you want loud...
My friend and I, out of boredom, pulled off the exhaust from his '92 firebird with a chevy 350 and replaced it with a pair of 3' wide steel pipes that we bent so they stuck out from under the doors; held them in place with coathangers that wrapped around the bottom of the seat and on the other end, the 'exhaust'. It even stayed together for about ten minutes of driving! We had headaches for a week, partially from the fumes, partially from the sound.

want loud? o/r x-pipe and 2 chamber flowmasters w/ dumps. Bout the loudest you are going to get, but i promise its not the best sounding.

on a 5.0 based car, the best sound i've ever heard was o/r h-pipe and 3 chamber flows. got that classic mustang sound. Just follow the link posted above and listen to all the combo's for yourself, and then design.

you want loud, o/r h-pipe and a set of bullet mufflers. should rattle the front windows in the hizzie. An X-pipe is more effcient both in sound reduction and function though.

yeah i dont like it when people put exhaust on their cars thats too loud. it doesnt sound clear. it is like a drone sound. i like a nice crisp burble and a nice growl when you get on it
