battery light...stays dim even with motor off

*not driven 93 mustang 2.3L for about a month...been outside,and rained alot*

-battery light staying on (bright when keys in motor running...***staying on but dimm, motor off key out***)
-if i pull fuse #18 then the dimm battery light goes out completely
-note...volt meter showing normal and believe charging

any ideas? i understand battery light on,could be alternator...but why does light stay on,all be it dimm even when motor is off and keys out????

I've looked around and can't find what might be causing the light to be on. I had a Volvo many years ago that did the same thing. I just un-did the battery if it was going to sit for the day. I was afraid the light might drain the battery. I did this til the day i sold it for a year or so. The alternator was still working and the battery still started the engine so i never tried to fix it LOL!!!

Maybe check the connections for water or something since it sat for a while before the light started staying on.

Are you talking about the volt meter in the car or a handheld unit? If its the meter in the car, can you get a hold of a hand held voltage tester and let us know how many volts your battery is holding while the car is off? Then again while its running?

Im talking volt meter in car (dont have a handheld one)

update: red battery light staying on even with car off,and keys out...so i tryed pulling red wire plug from alternator, and light goes out....it's wierd, because volt meter shows alternator charging and car starts and runs fine...but perhaps alternator is slowly going, and battery light on (even when car is off) is it's way of warning driver?????

guess ill have to take alternator off,and have it checked..........

any updates?

Sounds like you have a bad connection somewhere...... if the sensor is not getting enough voltage it would come on like this. It could be due to a loose/corroded connection, bad battery, short in the wiring, or the belt is slipping.

update:

it was alternator...replaced and now battery light no longer stays on (even with motor off and keys out)

guess some type fox system that warns you non stop if your alternator is bad (which mine was)

- or else a typical Fox electrical gremlin... Got to love simple fixes. Wonder if a 3G alternator conversion can be done on 2.3 'Stangs as well.

Yes, you most certainly can use a 3G alt on a 2.3; just need to grind the bracket a bit. I put a 200amp 3G on my '91 2.3 turbo project
