Hey I bought a 1987 mustang lx 5.0 coupe recently. The transmission is messed up. It seems to be just the sychronizers grinding(the car grinds going into second and first and pops out of first gear sometimes) I took it to a transmission shop so they could look at it and they told me(without taking the tranny out just driving it) that it would cost me 1150 dollars plus tax to rebuild it or put a used t5 with 74 thousand miles on it in my car. They said thats the best they could offer me and that it was a GREAT deal. I would like to know what everybody thinks about this and what the price should be based around. Also I have a used t5 transmission my friend is offering me out of an older maybe an 87 or 88 4 cylinder turbo coupe thunderbird. Will this transmission work in my 1987 mustang 5.0? what about the gears and will it be able to handle the torque? it would save me sooo much money to have them put that one in apparently. (im in school and strapped for cash) thanks for any advice.

also someone told me they had the same problem in their 88 gt with the sychronizers and got it fixed for 450$. Stupid me I forgot to ask him where he took it........

I'd shop around. Sounds a bit high to me.

1150 is quite high for a t5 rebuild. You could most liekly reaplce the whole tranny with a referb one for less than that.

If I was going to spend that kind of money I would put a new tranny in since they are about that much. However if you have the tools you should look into a rebuild kit. THey run about $200 and it has everything except the gears (insome kits). I might end up having to do this to ours if the clutch isnt messed up.

That sounds high....after all, you can buy a brand spanking new Z Spec T-5 from Ford Racing for nearly the same money.

The 4 cylinder Turbo coupe trans will physically bolt in but will not work/last...the input shaft is a smaller diameter and they are not rated for the same power levels.

That's definitely too much for a rebuild...for that amount I'd buy a new world class T5

ok i thought it was too much. Where can I find that z spec tranny from ford racing for that cheap? what site can i go to? i could get the rebuild kit...but how hard is it to put together considering I have no experience in dealing with transmissions at all?
