New Member Needs Help

Hello All,

My name is Thomas. I'm living in north/central Massachusetts and I've owned my '66 for 12 years and is also my first car!

I did a lot of work to it when I was a kid, but life caught up to me and she say for years until just a few months ago when I brought her home from being stored at my father's house.

My problem is my C4 transmission. The problem is I can't physically shift my selector lever down lower than the first drive gear (2 and 3 gear only). It will not move further down away from park than this gear. I just dropped the transmission pan due to a horribly dry gasket, but before I replace the gasket and fill with new fluid, what should I look for to solve my shifting problem?

Any help would be great, I've been searching through similar topics of discussion but I can't seem to find any information.

take the screws out of the shifter cover and lift it up to see if any obstruction is preventing you from shifting to low .. perhaps and old coin or coke bottle top is in the way .. if not then go under the car and remove the shift linkage from the trans .. do this at the front of the trans ..( the part hooking to the shifter is adjustable and may be difficult to put back in the correct place).. it is a tight slip fit but will pop out with a little persuasion ..then see if the shifter will go thru the full motion or if the trans will click thru all the gears ..

Last night I found a bolt that made its was down and landed on the ear that comes off the transmission which the linkage connects to. Not sure where the bolt came from yet. It looks too new and clean to be anything original off the car. Very odd, problem solved though!

I have a picture of the sucker, but I'm using the app and it fails to upload each time :-/

I love these vehicle specific forum sights. Such a great resource! Thanks again.
