I was just wondering, I know everyone says that in Bullitt the Mustang was dubbed over with the sound of a GT-40 on a race track but if that's the case why does it have the same sound in the documentary when it's racing the Dodge Charger round the track? Surely they wouldn't of done the dubbing for a documentary as well? Also I think i've heard a GT-40 once on a tv show and i don't think it sounded like the noise in Bullitt, I wonder if anyone who worked on the film has ever spoken about that? thanks

Hi, I have heard of the GT40 sound story. One thing is for sure, the fastback shifts 5 times, difficult in 68 with a 4 speed. So it might be true...

yeah, i don't really see why they would use another car's sound anyway as the Mustang would sound nice enough as it is? thanks

if it isn't the real sound it's really good editing. thanks, Justin

that is the official word from the movie studio as far as i know. i read that for the filming of the remake of "Gone" that they were pretty star struck over the sound of the car in Bullitt and wanted to use a GT-40 for Eleanor instead of the "gt 500" but it would have been way to expensive to even use kit cars since so many would be destroyed. i haven't seen the documentary that i know of unless you're talking about the little short about the filiming of it before the movie. if so that was also done at the same time the movie was and is likely the car was dubbed on that as well.

yeah the short documentary before the film, thanks, Justin

LOL, Bullitt is great for alot of reasons, but editing isn't one of them. I counted 16 shifts in the mustang without it slowing down, the Charger loses 6 hub caps, and you see that same VW beetle over, and over, and over again. :-D

i mean the sound editing is good, eg when he misses the turn and reverses then wheel spins off, the dubbed in sound fits the image on screen quite well, i agree the Beetle stuff is bad

I just watched Bullitt for the first time thewhole way through last friday night and I noticed the shifting didn't seem right for the car. But another thing I noticed, in the begining when he is returning to his apartment (the first time the mustang is seen), it looked like he shifted into reverse, with a culumn shift automatic to back into the parking spot on the hill. Anyone else notice that?

the documentary is brilliant, it's short but there are a few shots of wheel spins etc, they must have had so much fun going round that race track all day in the Mustang and Charger, has anyone seen the making of? is there more footage?
