hey guys im new here and have a question regarding a 71 stang on ebay;

its got a 79 302 in it with auto (c6?) tranny and the guy wants 1200 for it,
i need to know if its worth my time (and money) to put a new engine(351c or 429cj) and manual trans in (for $5000ish???) or is this just wishful thinking? :dunno:

please let me know what y'all think :-D

thanks,

A1

Welcome to the site!

I guess just like anything else if you want the car and can afford the time and money . . . buy away!!

Are the floor pans in good shape? Lots of rust? Rear end, brakes, etc. If you can get it cheap and it is a solid car, it should make a good ride.

Are you just looking for the 71-73 body style?

That is my $.02.

Good luck, keep us informed

Manual Tranny's run about 2-3,000 plus you'll need to convert the auto. You're looking at at least 1000 for the motor, probably more like 1500-2000. You're going to need several new items to take the car from a 302 to a bigger block.

You might be able to hit the mark of 5000 (just barely), but be careful, because as capri asked, if the car is rusting out around the engine, you may just spend that extra cash for nill. 1200 sounds cheap, and usually you get what you pay for. Be careful, and do some research. I would DEFINATELY not buy the car site unseen for that price. You should go and check it out first before buying to make sure it is salvageable.

Good luck with it. I hope it works out. :nice:

EDIT: Advanced sells a 302 long block crate motor for about $900. That's what I'm basing my costs on. Other motors may cost a lot more, especially if you're looking into more performance minded engine blocks.

upon careful consideration and a closer look at the car(yeah, alot more rust than i thought), ive decided its not "the one" for me, but dont worry, ill find her yet!
