Last year the condenser went...warranty ok.

This year ...with 18k and stored for 18 months of the 36 she's been alive - my 2011 5.0 AC compressor went. No warranty and ford wants 1K plus tax to fix.... cdn

Anyone else having ac issues??

A/C repairs are not cheap, it has been several years since I have dealt with that type of repair, but it is on par with what I expect.

I wonder if the "stored for 18 months" had anything to do with it. Many years ago I had a Ford T-bird that I didn't drive much (student) and the AC on that car was constantly failing. They claimed it was because the seals and o-rings would dry out from not being used enough. Not sure I believed it but whatever.

I have heard the same thing many times. I believe that the oil in the freon lubes the seals so if it isn't running the seals can get dry.

I am not certain of this but I think I read that one of the reasons they run the a/c compressor with the defroster in a lot of cars these days is so the compressor gets some exercise year round and keeps things lubricated as pointed out above.

If it's out of warranty never take it back to the dealer for any service. Get the part number of the compressor and find one for 1/3 the cost. Find a local shop that does installs and freon/AC work. Make sure to first take it to that shop to have them confirm the compressor is shot also. 18K miles is nothing.

Also it happened to my '11 5.0. The compressor died at 20k miles, also a click noise from the dash A/C control unit developed about 15 k miles. The only good thing on my side was that I acquired the extended service warranty, just the cost on parts of the compressor was about $500. I think this is a low quality part from FORD MO.CO. Too bad. I have a 90k. miles toyota & a 80k. miles Honda and the A/C still is working without any issue.
Now that you don't have warranty. Compare costs & take it to an independent A/C shop.

I think Ford just didn't do a very good job with the AC on these cars. Mine went out on my 2011 GT with on 31K miles last week. I have had my car a little over the three limit on the warranty so I will get stuck with the bill. From the research I have done it seems like a LOT of people are having issues, it would be nice if they issued a recall but I'm sure that won't happen. I'm pretty upset about it and it will have me thinking when I go to purchase my next vehicle.
