Description
Prop Rod? Are you still using that old style factory prop rod that Ford installed in your S197 Mustang? Well then join the new millennium with a set of Modern Muscle Design Hood Struts from AmericanMuscle for clean modern looks and convenience.

Style And Strength. Designed to get rid of that old ugly prop rod, this set of two powerful yet sleek MMD gas struts not only makes opening your Pony's hood much easier, but also holds it securely in place. Made from lightweight steel and aluminum, they have a black powercoated finish to give your engine bay a much cleaner appearance.

No Drilling Required. The stamped steel brackets included in this MMD kit are designed to bolt into the existing mounting holes in the hood so there is no drilling required for installation. Struts can be installed on factory hoods as well as aftermarket hoods that use the factory bolt location. If your aftermarket hood is lighter than the factory hood, use caution when opening the hood due to the power of the strut.

Application. This Modern Muscle Design Hood Strut Kit is specifically designed for use on the 2005 to 2014 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, GT, Bullitt, BOSS and Shelby GT500 models. The Kit includes two black gas powered struts, mounting brackets, and all the required mounting hardware.

Mounting require hood removal? With bolt on install, can you leave hood in place with prop rod & install one side at a time or is this a 2 man job with hood removal? Thanx

Pete13 Year: 2013 Model: GT

  • You can do it by yourself, I did, however it would be easier if you had another set of hands. just follow the instructions and do not fully remove the bolts holding the hood, remove the front bolt and then loosen the back bolt. You will have to push the hood away from the factory bracket to get the hood strut bracket sandwiched in between, then tighten the bolt and then then reinstall the front bolt. The one thing that happened on both sides is the bolts on the fender appeared to strip as they could not be tightened fully but they do hold and I have not had a problem with them. Good luck and one of the better mods I made as no prop rod to get in the way.

    Hood Strut Installation Modification

This is a great product and easy to install but it takes two people to finally pop on the struts, one to hold the hood at the proper hight so the strut will allign with the ball sockets and one to pop the strut onto the ball socket. After I closed the hood and re-opened it to look at my handywork, I noticed that the lower bracket had rotated around the bolt, even so the torque on the bolt was correct. Looking at the dynamics of the whole thing, I decided that the two lower brackets would be prevented from rotating if they were reversed, that is, the D/L marked bracket goes on the passenger side and the P/L marked bracket goes on the drivers side. This switch then places the long side of the bracket in the correct place to prevent rotation while maintaining the same position of the lower bracket ball socket. I have submitted a picture of this modified installation.

    Bolt-on hood strut kit

Fairly easy to install; however be careful when popping the strut ends onto the fittings. I had problems with the metal clips inside the strut ends wanting to slide to the side when pushed onto the fittings. I finally put some lithium grease on either end of the fittings to make the installation easier. Once installed, these struts work great; the hood opens a good 6 inches farther than with the prop rod and really completed the look under the hood. I never understood why Ford didn't put these on from the factory (on a $55,000 car) since they put them on the trunk.

    Hood Strut Kit

Easy to install because one of the hoods screws is always in place during the installation; allowing the hood to stay centered and aligned. Product is durable and does a good job of holding the hood upright. Best of all it is not overpriced, as are other parts.

Very clean look and easy installation

These are very easy to install, though the pictures in the instructions could be larger. I found that it was easier to loosen the bolt to the hood at the back far enough to slip the upper mount in before removing the forward bolt, this helped to hold the hood in place and make the process easier. Also, don't leave the wiper washer line in place, it must be moved or it will be crushed by the passenger side bracket. Very clean install, I highly recommend these.

    Bolt-on Hood Strut Kit

The kit as received from American Muscle was complete and extremely easy to install. To effectively support the weight of the hood from a point so close to the hinge point of the hood requires precise calibration of the force delivered by the gas shocks. The balance of the shocks was perfect. Take it from an engineer, they have it calculated perfectly....

    Be careful

One thing I have learned from years of assembling items that come with directions is to "follow the directions". I tried to install these struts and the spring clips in the ends of the struts snapped in two and were unusable. I was sent a second kit after contacting American Muscle and made a second attempt at installation. After running into the same problem and calling AM for help I was told the clips were to be removed before installation. The instructions made no note of this. Now maybe I should have been aware the clips had to be removed first but it would have been so easy had the instructions stated as much. Since AM does not have the clips in stock I was advised to try a local hardware store or they would send me an entire kit to take the clips from and return the balance of the kit. AM has been terrific and the struts are excellent based on other installations I have seen but the instructions should have that one additional piece of information.

    extra work for 2010+ owners

nice product, works as advertised, BUT, 2010+ owners will be changing the location of the sound tube for clearance, not the worst job but be prepared for this extra step. still worth the extra steps to rid yourself of the prop rod. just follow enclosed instructions.

    Much improved.

From reading all the comments, I was a little hesitant in ordering this item. But much to my surprise, I was very please with the install and packaging. The packaging is very solid with cutout foam to hold everything together so there are no dings while traveling in the mail. Instructions were very easy to follow. Install only took about 20 minutes. I didn't even need to realign my hood. It closed and fit like a glove. The only complaint I have (the reason for only 4 stars) is that the passenger side upper bracket covers to holes where the windshield washer hose goes. I had to improvise with zip ties... *grumble*. Also touch up paint is recommended for the bolt heads, as they will get ground up a bit.
