Next year probably can’t come soon enough for Ford Motor Co. when it comes to revving up sales for the Mustang.

For the third straight month, the Ford pony car trailed the Chevrolet Camaro in total number of vehicles sold in the segment.

Ford sold 4,420 Mustangs in September compared to 5,569 Camaros sold for the same month, according to a GM report. Even with the Mustang topping Camaro sales for the months of May, June and July, the Ford pony car still lags its rival for overall sales for the year by more than 5,000 units.

To date, Mustang has sold 59,165 units compared to 64,815 Camaros sold. With only a few more months left in 2013 and an updated Camaro just starting to roll into dealer lots, it seems unlikely that the Mustang will be able to catch the Camaro this year.

However, the Dodge Challenger remains to be the lowest selling car in the segment with 3,932 models sold in September and 42,577 for the year.
