When I first got this car I was getting gas almost every day .... really surprised the hel| out of me ... had no idea how small these tanks actually are, and with the low-fuel light coming on I was putting in 11-12 gallons ... I expected to be closer to the 16-gallon capacity, but then doing the math of 14-16 mpg that I'm averaging, it makes sense ... lol

it's 16 gallons, not too small at all for the size of the car, didn't gas tanks used to be 11??? I fill up at 1/4 tank all the time as I hear the fuel pump can be touchy... you bought a muscle car, it'll drink the gas, it's not MPG, it's SPG (smiles per gallon)... if you can't handle that, there is a V6 version to help you out.

Yeah, it's pretty annoying. Mine usually pops up at quarter of a tank and I have to reset the message every time I step in the car. I think I know when to fill up my car. Leave me alone.

16 gallons is a bit on the smaller side of most of today's cars. Most that I see are somewhere between 18 and 20 gallons. I believe my Charger is supposed to be 18 gallons, but I fuel up every time the needle hits 1/4 of a tank and it typically takes around 12 gallons to fill it back up. I assume the missing 2 gallons are a safety margin built into the gas gauge.
From what I have read though, the miles till empty calculation is based off of the average MPG calculation. As such, if you drive aggressively or take part in lots of stop and go traffic, the lower average MPG the car calculates will cause your fuel light to come on earlier, since it believes you will use up the remaining 1/4 of a tank quickly. Resetting the average MPG calculation and backing off the throttle (I know, its hard) should cause the little light to come on closer to the 1/8 of a tank mark.
While I do enjoy some of the technology of these newer vehicles some of it is a real pain in the rear. My mom had a Nissan Pathfinder with automated climate controls that I absolutely couldn't stand. You would set an interior temperature, and the car would vary the temp of the AC according to outside conditions. Sounds great, accept it would blow hot air on pretty much any day where the temp was below 75 degrees unless you adjusted the temp all the way to the lowest setting. I much rather the simple manual controls on my Charger.

The fuel pumps are in the tank, and are thus cooled by the fuel itself. If there is no fuel in the tank (or at least it's below the level of the pump), the pumps will not be cooled, and can fail quickly if done repeatedly.
Ergo, the car *****es at you to put fuel in it nice and early to try to keep you from overheating your fuel pumps. Ford has been doing this for a number of years; my '94 SHO would turn the light on with a good 5-6 gallons left in the tank.

Hi BlackinBlack,
I recommend you keep an eye on it and if you become concerned, please make an appointment with your Ford dealer. Then, PM me with your VIN, dealer, mileage, full name, and best daytime number so I can escalate it to the Customer Service Manager for your area.
I love the fact your vehicle is this smart, Frosty the Snowman!
