Just purchased a new 2011 V6 Premium and love it. I had wanted the limited slip rear end but there wasn't one available at the time w/o ordering so I settled for the 2.73. Then, I read several places that the 2.73 IS a limited slip! Is this true? The salesman didn't mention it when I told him I would like the limited slip, thinking I had to get the 3.31 to get limited slip. It seems some salesmen don't have all the answers.

I think all the new cars are limited slip no matter what the gear ratio. Just guessing from past experience.

Hi Kevin! I have a 2012 V6 on order and I did research this - all of the models come with limited-slip differentials as standard equipment. Not surprised your salesman didn't know this...

Also, many folks, including myself, change out the gearing after they receive the car. In my case, since I ordered a convertible, I don't have any choice as they limit all V6 convertibles to the standard 2.73. Goofy but true.

Thanks guys for the info. I am happy with the 2.73 gears as I want the best mileage, not hot performance. But the limited slip is handy here in the north east in case I get caught in some bad weather. I am visiting the dealership later today for service on my pickup and will see my salesman. I think I'll mention to him about the 2.73 being limited slip.

Yup, ALL Mustangs now come equipped with a LSD. I also have the 2.73's and just "enjoyed" my first winter with the car. I run snow tires all around and put 3 concrete blocks in the trunk (and top off the gas tank) just before snow storms. The car goes through ANYTHING mother nature throws at you and you will NOT get stuck..I've even gone around 4wd SUV's that were struggling!

ALL 2011 & 2012 Mustangs have a limited slip axle - regardless of ratio.

Just came back from my dealer and sat down with my salesman. He grabbed the 2011 order book and did some digging. Sure enough, he found the line stating "limited slip rear axle now standard on ALL Mustangs." He said "how did I miss that?" As he read the book it was obvious that the option was the different gear ratio, not the LSD. Of course the 2012 models are the same in this respect. He thanked me for the info and said he would mention it at the next sales meeting.

During my negotiations to buy the vehicle several other sales and finance personnel were involved with locating a car for me and apparently NONE of them knew about this. I mentioned the desire for a LSD several times to several of them but they were not aware the 2.73 was LSD.

Oh well, I ended up getting what I wanted and I'm happy. Except for this I was treated very well and have no complaints.

As others have mentioned, the 2.73:1 is a limited-slip rear axle and it is standard on the V6. I love how these guys just know their stuff! You guys rock!

Thanks for confirming that information. It was funny while dealing for the car that nobody mentioned that the 2.73 IS a limited slip axle. Guess they just didn't know. I met with my saleman (who is a very good friend of mine for nearly 40 years) and we went over the brochure for the 2011 Mustang. Sure enough, in the right hand column of page of page 4 it states "Now standard: limited-slip axle transfers.....". He and I both laughed and said "who did we miss that?"

But that's ok, I have my limited slip in case I get caught in the snow.

I have an 86 GT 302 which I ordered with a 5 speed manual and the 2.73 axle. Gets 30 mpg (out of this V8!). But 4th gear is faster than 5th gear, but so much fun to drive.

The 2011+ 5.0 engines can get 30+mpg as well as long as you keep the speed below 65mph and keep the cruise enabled on a moderately flat drive.

This one I call BS on. I had one and you couldn't get anywhere close to 30 mpg out of it even with a 50 mph tailwind and a sail.



This one, I would say you might get the dash readout up to 30 on flat ground with a tailwind or going downhill but that isn't what the fuel economy will be on a calculated tank of gas, miles driven divided by gallons used.

To me, the lack of limited-slip rear end (and single exhaust) on the V6 models made them kind of lame compared to posi V8 models. Now that the V6 cars have limited-slip and dual exhaust, I mean they're totally cool now!

I had a 2.73 in my 1987 GT 5-speed and it felt plenty fast while providing maximum mileage. I had no desire to swap to a different ratio.
