A leaked picture of an engine bay and a document for engine oil requirements for future models give us some hints on the Shelby GT500’s engine.

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is one of the most anticipated vehicles of the decade. Unfortunately for enthusiasts, it also happens to be one of the most well-guarded secrets. There’s a not a lot of concrete information swirling around on the upcoming Shelby GT500, but we may have gotten the first real piece of information that points toward the muscle car’s powertrain.

A leaked picture of an engine and a document on engine oil requirements for 2020 model year Fords popped up on Mustang6G, providing us with a hint of what will power the Shelby GT500. The picture of the engine has “5.2 L” and the Shelby Cobra snake logo inscribed on what looks to be atop of a supercharger’s housing. We know we don’t have to remind our readers, but the Shelby GT350 and GT350R feature a 5.2-liter V8 engine.

In addition to the picture of the supercharger housing, a document on engine oil requirements for vehicles has a spot for a “5.2L Supercharged Mustang GT500” in the same category as the “5.2L Mustang GT350.” And in case you were wondering, both engines require 5W-50 oil.

Another image of what appears to be a massive, slotted front rotor and Brembo brakes also found their way to the website, but those don’t exactly provide any information on what’s under the hood. The massive braking setup, though, alludes to the fact that the Shelby GT500 will need some serious stopping power to reign in the muscle car’s speed.

These leaked images may not provide a lot of tangible information on the Shelby GT500, but we now know there’s a strong chance that the muscle car will come with a supercharged version of the 5.2-liter V8 engine that’s currently found in the Shelby GT350 and GT350R. According to a report by Motor Authority, citing rumors, the Shelby GT500’s engine will have a cross-plane crankshaft instead of the flat-plane unit found in the Shelby GT350 and GT350R.

The outlet also claims that rumors point towards the Shelby GT500 being equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox that will come from the Ford GT supercar, power will be in the neighborhood of 800 horsepower, and 20-inch wheels with 315-mm tires at the back will help put the power down in a usable manner.

We’ll have to wait to see if any of these proposed components actually end up on the Shelby GT500. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long.
