Carroll Shelby’s 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

This very 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 was owned by Carroll Shelby himself, many years after it was originally sold.

Given the fact that Carroll Shelby was a huge car guy, through and through, it’s no surprise that the iconic figure owned and drove a lot of cool vehicles in his time on this earth. Many of those vehicles were ones that beared his name, too – including more than one Shelby 289/427, not to mention plenty of Shelby Mustangs. Typically, these vehicles wind up trading hands for big money – unsurprising, given the impact Shelby had on the automotive world as a whole – but this 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 couldn’t find a buyer when it hit the auction block recently.

Over at Bring a Trailer, the clock just expired on this 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 auction, which was bid up to €226,000 ($262,804 USD), but didn’t meet its reserve price, so it’s staying put for now – unless the high bidder and the seller are close enough to make a deal. It has a rather interesting story to tell as a car that was originally delivered to City Motors in National City, California, but its first owner didn’t buy it – rather, they won it in a contest.

Some years later, California-based racer Chuck Jones partially-restored the pony car under his ownership before it was purchased by Shelby and Stephen Becker in 1999. Shelby proceeded to install a more modern air conditioner and headers. In 2011, the current owner purchased the GT500 and exported it to Greece, where it has lived ever since. On its own accord, the 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is one of just 2,048 fastbacks produced for the model year, so it’s fairly rare, too.

The Wimbledon White paint and side stripes were resprayed at some point in the 1980s and still look good today, joining features including a ducktail rear spoiler, fender extensions, air scoops on the sail and quarter panels, and a fiberglass ventilated hood with a ram-air scoop. The car rolls on a set of 15-inch aluminum 10-spoke wheels with Shelby Cobra center caps, which are wrapped with BFGoodrich tires.

The interior is quite nice and equipped with black upholstery that’s been redone on the driver’s side, along with a roll bar and shoulder harnesses, plus Carroll Shelby’s signature on the glovebox. As for power, that comes from the 428 cubic-inch Police Interceptor V8, which left the factory with dual four-barrel Holley carburetors and was rated at 335 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, mated to a four-speed manual transmission.

This Shelby GT500 comes with an array of documentation proving its celebrity ownership history, making it quite the find. While it hasn’t yet found a new home, we don’t doubt that someone out there will pony up the cash necessary to give it one, either.
