Ford’s World Endurance Championship Mustang project has put a challenging Le Mans 24 Hour behind it as it heads to Interlagos in Brazil for the 6 Hours of Sao Paulo this weekend. The Proton Competition Team is instead out to go one better on its stunning showing at the previous 6 Hour race at Spa Francorchamps when its two Mustang LMGT3s came home second and third in class.

Ben Tuck, Ben Barker and Bernardo Sousa were still inside the class top ten after 24 hours of racing when they came home ninth at Le Mans, while the second Stefano Gattuso, Giammarco Levorato and Dennis Olsen car retired after a heavy crash following a wheel nut failure. That left the 88 Mustang tenth on the WEC LMGT3 championship log, and the 77 15th.

Strong Results Brought High 24 Hour Expectations

A month prior to that however, the Mustangs waged a classic Ford Versus Ferrari battle with the 296 GT3 that eventually won that race to end up second and third at Spa Francorchamps 6 Hour. The Pony Cars are out not just to repeat that, but to also go one step each up that Brazilian podium on Sunday.

‘Both Ford Mustang crews gave it their all at Le Mans, the results were t quite what we’d hoped” Proton Competition team principal Christian Ried explains. “Both our 77 and 88 cars continue to improve at every outing the whole team is primed to come back better than ever in Brazil .”

Practice for the Sao Paulo 6 Hours begins Friday 11 July, with qualifying Saturday and the race Sunday. Catch all the action including live timing and streaming at fiawec.com.
