S650 Mustang All Set For UK Sales

The export Mustang for the UK market will be V8-only, and the 500 horsepower Dark Horse will be available.

In America, we’ve known for years that the Ford Mustang is a high-performance icon. It’s a do-it-all performance car that’s remained relatively affordable and functional through the years. As it turns out, the rest of the world is finally starting to catch on.

Believe it or not, the Ford Mustang has enjoyed a cult following overseas for decades. However, back in 2015, Ford began offering the then-new S550 Mustang in Europe. Grey market imports and conversions were no longer necessary. European Mustang sales reached a high of 15,204 in 2016, but the average is closer to 5,000 or so units a year.

Admittedly, it’s a niche vehicle, but still popular enough for Ford to continue offering the Mustang for sale there. According to the British publication Autocar, the new S650 Mustang will go on sale there in July. When it does, it will be the least expensive V8 you can buy in Britain.

For Those With Discerning Tastes

Both coupes and convertibles will be offered. However, the 2.3 liter EcoBoost model will no longer be offered in the UK, with prices for the GT starting at £55,685, or $71,240 USD as of this writing. The Dark Horse will also be available for an additional £10,000, which will run about $84,000 USD.

Both the six-speed manual and the 10-speed automatic will be available. As with most export Mustangs, the main differences will be chiefly related to lighting and reflectors. Although the press imagery for the European Mustang shows it in left hand drive configuration, we assume that British Mustangs will be sold new in a right hand drive configuration.

The language in the Autocar article makes it clear that the Mustang’s marketing focus in Europe is shifting. As the world at large moves away from internal combustion engines and towards electric power, Ford will market the Mustang in Europe as a niche enthusiast vehicle. From the sales numbers listed above, we can infer that it already has been for quite a while.

As Mustang enthusiasts ourselves, we’re happy to see that the Mustang is so well-received all around the world. We’re all too happy to share the joy of Mustang ownership with our friends across the globe.
