The Mustang Goes Right-Hand Drive

For the first time in its entire existence, those individuals across the pond will be able to purchase a true-from-the-factory right-hand drive Mustang. In an effort to build a truly global platform, Ford began its shakedown of the first-ever, right-hand-drive Mustang.

The new Mustang will be sold in 25 separate RHD countries, as well as a few other markets that are LHD. We’ve seen how dogged Ford has become at building a global identity. This move to a RHD platform for its famous pony car just makes sense. Take, for example, the huge successes that the Fiesta and Focus ST have been. A few years ago, Ford would never have taken the chance of building a global platform, but the automaker took the chance and it really paid off. Now Ford wants to see if it can get lightning to strike twice with a global version of the Mustang.

According to Ford, the first test version is a bit of a Frankenstein’s monster creation due to the fact that the tooling and infrastructure isn’t built yet to help out with the car’s build. Going forward, however, the tooling will be built, and both the RHD and LHD Mustangs will be built side-by-side, and then shipped to the respective countries.

The Mustang’s iconic styling and famed nameplate mated with brand-new technology will make it a global hit.
