If you ever been to SEMA you know there’s a lot of ground to cover in three days.

The Las Vegas Convention Center, where the aftermarket show is held, is huge.  And seeing everything is practically impossible –especially with the endless number of Mustangs on hand.

OK, maybe that’s a long drawn out excuse for – ‘’yeah, we missed a few.’’ But thanks to our counterparts over at Mustangs Daily, we’ve had a chance to catch up on one that’s definitely worth noting with all of the focus on electric power.

It’s the story of  Larry Gareffa converting a 1965 Mustang Fastback into an electric vehicle.

Yup, that’s right – a ’65 Fastback EV.

Wait, you might want to hear him out before you start criticizing him for his electric conversion of such a classic.  As president of the Mustang and Classic Ford Club in Las Vegas, Gareffa definitely has a lot of respect for the legacy of the Mustang.

In fact, he says the car, showcased at SEMA, didn’t have an engine when he decided to convert it into an electric vehicle, according to the Mustangs Daily story.

At one point, Gareffa even considered installing a 347 stoker motor with a Tremc T5 transmission in the Fastback. But instead Gareffa decided to load up a dozen 12-volt batteries in the trunk that sends power to a motor typically used for hoisting elevators.

But why go electric? Gareffa said he really has know where he got the idea from.

The Mustang has a range of 25-30 mile range and can be recharged at any charging station.  Apparently all in now on the idea of having an EV Fastaback, Gareffa now has his hopes on finding sponsors to switch over to lithium batteries. He says the conversion would nearly triple his driving range to 70 – 75 miles.

It’s a pretty cool idea although we doubt he’d find much support on a Mustang forum for converting a ’65 Fastback into an EV.
