There’s certainly no question this 1964½ Indy 500 Pace Car is a collector’s dream, but is it worth over a million dollars?

Apparently, RK Motors in Charlotte thinks so because that’s what they’re hoping to get for the car on eBay. The classic Mustang, touted as “the most significant historic Mustang in the world” by the seller, certainly has a storied history.

This is the only remaining convertible Mustang of three 1964½ models that were sent to Holman Moody to be modified into Indy Pace Cars for the 1964 Indianapolis 500. In addition, this drop-top was also driven by Ford Motor Company heir Benson Ford, according to the eBay listing.

After serving as a parade vehicle for Florida’s Sebring International Raceway, the Mustang actually sat in storage for nearly 20 years until a Mustang Club of America official learned that it was being stored at a track less than 20 miles from his house.

After talking to the track owner, the MCA official became the first and only private owner of the Mustang and began restoring it with 95 percent of its original parts — some being one-of-a-kind originals, according to the vehicle info.

Still, with a price listing of $1,099,000, and a current bid of $41,300 with seven days left, I’d say getting the full value might be tough.
