Not Knowing Classic Mustang Model Years Can be Costly

Mustang Stolen

How important is it to get the model year right when trying to sell a classic Mustang? Well, as we’ve learned here at The Mustang Source, more important than most people outside the classic car universe would ever realize. Just one year can make all the difference in the world when trying to sell a Mustang, which is exactly what a man in New York foundĀ out earlier this year after trying to unload a vintage Ford pony car on Craigslist.

Apparently when listing the Mustang on the site for $5,000, the man mistakenly identified it as a 1966 model, when in fact it was a 1965 Mustang. The wrong year and cost of the car, seemingly in pretty good condition, immediately raised a red flag for one potential buyer, which prompted him to contact police.

The tip led authorities to do some investigating, discovering that the Mustang had actually been stolen in Connecticut in 1987.

After making a few calls, police learned that the original owner was now deceased, and with no next of kin, the Mustang was recently put up for auction in New York with a minimum bid of $6,000.
