Amid all the buzz about the 2015 Ford Mustang, a lot of the conversation to date has been centered on what the new model will look like.

Sure, the core DNA of the Mustang is and will always be the powertrain − and the true test for Mustang enthusiasts will be whether the new model lives up to performance expectations on the road.

Still, it’ll be the exterior design of the new Pony car that will initially dictate whether it has appeal or not. It is, after all, the look that sets the tone for any new vehicle especially one as iconic as the Mustang.

It’s the kind of thing that Ford definitely isn’t taking lightly as evident in how tightlipped they are about the car, despite the numerous renderings circulating that seem to provide some indication of what the 2015 Mustang might look like.

To show just how stringent the process must be to introduce a new model, Ford has dug into its archives to share a few cars drawn, built and tested in the past that didn’t quite make the cut to carry the Mustang nameplate.
