Could a Station Wagon Have Survived Mustang’s 50 Year Legacy?

With 50 years of designing and engineering decisions to sort through, there’s gotta be that one big “what if?” moment. It’s kind of like the automotive version of Monday-morning quarterbacking. But if you’re pondering the idea after the game, then you’re really just entertaining yourself.

The 1965 Mustang station wagon is one of those kind of stories. Though our guess is that most here are probably glad that Ford passed on the idea, as highlighted in a recent Mustang 360 story.

Even during the ‘60s, I can only imagine what the responses were like to a white and blue-striped G.T. 350 wagon. But what if Ford did greenlight the thing, back in the day; do you think it would still be around now?

Of course, it could be argued that some of the more recent takes on a shooting brake Mustang have never really taken off, which might be a good indication of how a wagon variant would have fared over the last five decades. Still, without ever going into mass production, our opinions are speculative at best. Such are the pitfalls of Monday-morning Mustanging.
