This 260 MPH Mustang is a Top Speed Terror

The Mustang is mostly known for straight line performance. But this particular car is good for much more than a quarter mile blast.

1. Top Speed Pony

When you think of the Ford Mustang, you most likely envision a car capable of impressive 0-60 and 1/4 mile times. What you don't think of when you think of the Mustang is its capability as a top speed record setter. After all, no generation of the pony car is exactly what you might call "aerodynamic." But that didn't stop Bill Wagner and his son Billy Jr. from turning one into a class record holder at the Texas Mile.

2. From the Drags to the Mile

Wagner had always wanted a Mustang Shelby GT500 and finally got his hands on one back in 2011. He and his son took the bone stock car to nearby Royal Purple Raceway, where they proceeded to win the 12.00 index class. And yet, that effectively ended the car's drag racing career. The Wagner duo set their sights on the Texas Mile, where they recorded an initial run of 218.1 mph with just a few upgrades.

3. Taking the Next Step

Setting a class record on their first outing was just the beginning. But as competition grew stiffer, the Wagners knew they would have to step up their game to keep up. So they took the Shelby to East Texas Race Cars in Lufkin, Texas to turn it into a proper race-ready ride. It was there that the Mustang was fitted with a full roll cage and fire suppression system. The carpet and insulation were removed to prevent fires, but most of the remaining interior remains.

4. Things Get Serious

By now, the Wagners were fully vested in making their Mustang the fastest standing-mile ride on the planet. So it was time to take the next logical step and forgo the factory powerplant for a twin-turbo Accufab racing engine. The beastly motor is capable of pumping out well over 2,500 horsepower on Methanol, yet it's based on a 5.4-liter block. Obviously, the bottom end of the boosted engine is virtually bulletproof, with goodies like JE Pistons and Manley rods taking up shop inside.

5. Setting Records and Changing Perceptions

As if the insane engine wasn't enough, the Wagners covered their Texas Mile champ in a chrome blue wrap. And even though this Mustang doesn't see much street time anymore, the duo have easily achieved their goals on the track. After just a few shakedown runs with the new motor, Billy Jr. managed a 260 mph pass, which set a new record for the Shelby GT500 class. And that's just the beginning. There's no reason to doubt that this Mustang has more left in it. And it looks destined to change not just records, but perceptions as well along the way.
