How to Survive If Your Car Becomes Submerged in Water

If you are leaving a car show, and suddenly find yourself careening towards a body of water, it can make life pretty inconvenient for you on social media. You might not be able to escape the video evidence or the onslaught of memes, but you can escape from your submerged car. The folks at MythBusters showed us how a while back, but it seems timely to re-visit now.

When you crash into water — be it a flash flood, a pond, a river, or a public swimming pool — the pressure from the water outside of a sinking car is so strong that it essentially traps you inside, because you won’t be able to open a door. You’d have to wait until the car fills up completely with water, and by that time, you’re toast.

There’s two tricks to this: either try and open the door as soon as you can, and if not, keep one of those little hammers in your car that are made specifically for breaking car windows. Trying to do this without a center-punch style hammer like that is nearly impossible, so don’t think you’ll just be able to punch or kick out a window.

So keep these tips and tricks in mind if this situation ever arises, and don’t forget to change your Facebook name after.
