So you might want to retract that statement that SVT skipped production for many years. After some Googling and the unreliability of Wikipedia, it looks like they made close to 145,000 SVT badged vehicles , not counting the GT500, Ford GT, or even the Raptor. How does that compare to the number of Shelby badged GT500 Mustangs that SVT lovers / Shelby haters are arguing to be much more plentiful than vehicles that were sold as SVT without the Shelby name?
Just playing devil's advocate and trying to stir the pot a bit. Love to see people get fired up and passionate with their Shelby love and Shelby hate. Makes for good reading.

If you look at SVT Cobra production numbers compared to GT500 numbers they are pretty similar.

I always appreciate a debate but I don't think it is a fair argument. Technically all 2007-13 GT500s are SVTs. Why are the 1993-04 Cobras lumped together with all the non-Mustang based SVTs but not the GT500. When people think of an SVT Cobra they think top dog Mustang, not about the other SVT vehicles... very much how people think of the GT500.

Ok i'm looking up these stats so I don't know for certain if it is 100% accurate but it should be close.
I have 79959 SVT Cobras produced in 10 model years, roughly 7995 units per year average.
I have 37327 SVT GT500s produced in 6 model years, roughly 6221 units per year average.
The numbers are much closer than some would suggest. Keep in mind the 2010 had a very short production run ( didn't all Mustangs that year?).
If you really want to split hairs we can break it down by carry over models too!
1993 Cobra 4993 (not including R model)
1994-95 Cobra 11017 (not including R model)
1996-98 Cobra 28706
1999, 2001 Cobra 15346
2003-04 Cobra 19140 2003 was the best selling year
2007-09 GT500 22989 2007 was the best felling year
2010-12 GT500 14318 2012 was the best selling year
If you look at the trend GT500 sales should surpass the Cobra if production remains year to year... this was an interesting research project! I'm really surprised that the 1996-98 Cobra sold nearly 30,000 units to make it the best selling SVT Mustang. I thought the 2007-09 GT500 would have won that one!

A Man Just Needs Some....
I think there is room for both. SVT as a base line cobra and also a Shelby edition. They did it with saleen for years and they sold even if most were dresses up GT's. People who want a Shelby should have that option. People who just want a SVT cobra should also. Doesn't seem that difficult. Just seems like SVT is giving credit to Shelby for a great power plant the shelby had nothing to do with. Hell I don't care if they left the cobra off. Just give me the SVT goodies.
Oh and SVT actually started in 84 known as SVO originally.

The only reason why I mentioned that the SVT Cobra as "limited production" was in response to Five_Point_Oh insinuating that the 07 GT500 was limited production but the previous SVT Mustangs were not. In truth, SVT has been around for 20 years but skipped production for many years and the cars they do produce are in much fewer numbers than their mainstream siblings.
I think Shelby's name did bring the cost up back in 2007 when people actually thought that the GT500 was a limited production car but not so much now... I still remember people paying 25k ADMs in the Summer of 06, then again people were paying ADMs on GTs back in 05 too. I think the only real collectible modern Shelbys will be the new GT350 (not a fan of it's looks or pricing) and the Shelby GT500KR, also overpriced but IMO the best looking of the new Shelbys.

I would prefer SVT cobra only because i think it rolls off the tongue with a little more venom.
either way as long as it is faster, lighter, and better handling than the current car I dont care that much what its called. but I do hope they release it in 2014 with the GT and base model

I know of other makes have actually told dealers not to tack on ADMs. Either way I have always been patient and would never pay above MSRP, heck that is where the negotiations should start!

The ADMs discussion is a whole other subject not unique to the GT500 either, there is a local dealer in my neighborhood with a 2012 Boss 302 still with a 10k ADM. I know it is basic supply and demand but Ford should prevent ADMs. I'm still a little bitter about the 2007 GT500 I put a deposit on back in 2005, only to pass on the car because the dealer wanted $25000 on top of the MSRP.

I was born in 1987. My top 3 favorite Mustangs are the 03-04 Cobra, 68 GT500 KR, and 87-93 Notchback LX 5.0. I love the current S197s, and almost bought one, but the current GT500s just draw my attention (and rightfully so) - the Terminator makes me list to own one.

Don't think so? Just look at images of the Mutang II & the 07-09 Shelby directly from the front.
- similar upper grill
- similar lower grill
- round headlights in a square(ish) bucket

That's one of the things that made the Mustang II distinctive. When they switched to the fox-body, initially, the grill was straight edged & then they turned the grill opening upside down so the top was distinctively larger than the bottom. This resulted in the grill looking more like a smile.
When they went to the 2005 Stangs, they switched back to the retro 64.5/65 vertical sided grill. To make the Shelby look tougher, they went back to the "angry face" grill.
64.5/-66: oval and symmetrical
67-68: bottom corners rounded, top corners more square but symmetrical
69: symmetrical, top more rounded than 67-68
70: top slightly larger than the bottom
69-70 Shelby: square edged & symmetrical
71-73: symmetrical; similar to 69-70 Shelby
74-78: significantly smaller on top & larger on bottom.
