How to make interior lights stay turned off when door is opened?

Hi,

I tried to find the answer myself by reading the manual, but this was nowhere to be found in the lights section.

I would like to know how to make the interior lights stay off right after I turn off the car or if my door is open.

Thank you

The lights in our 06 civic can be turned off if the door is open. For some people they feel like it might save the battery.

It's handy when you're girlfriend is in the car and you don't want the wife to find out...

Seriously though, there are times like when you're having a coffee in your car on night shift and you don't want the interior light to come on when you shut off the ignition or open the door. My Focus does that, the light comes on for 20 seconds when you turn off the ignition, but you can turn it off.

Don't know what year yours is but mine's an '05. Maybe it's because mine's a standard transmission. There's a switch on the dome light that lets you choose between AlwaysOff-OnWithDoors/Ignition-AlwaysOn.

When I'm stalking it gives away my position

I'm not concerned about the battery or anything like that. It's just that there are times when I don't immediately get out of the car, I don't want my entire interior illuminated. It isn't a big deal, I just thought it was strange that there isn't an option to turn it off, as most vehicles do.

I guess I will just live with it.

Easy to do a simple wiring modification behind the map light housing. All you need to do is break the connection that grounds the circuit when the doors are opened. If it is done right then all you need to do is switch the map light button on as normal if you want the lamps to light up. Alternatively, if you wish to leave the dome light function but just want to switch it off at will, install a small black rocker switch in the map light housing (where the convertible top switch would normally go) which will switch off the circuit.

A simple 30 second solution would have remedied that. The dome/map light unit pops out with a tug of the hands and the connector can simply be unplugged.

I had to work on mine today as one of my Blue LED lamps failed and had to be replaced.

I was cycling through the options to change mycolor and I saw and option for AUTOLAMP with settings of 0, 10, and 20. I meant to mess around with it to see if that controlled it, but I forgot.

That could do the trick or it could be the auto-headlights....

If you use a screw driver and stick it in the latch and latch it the lights go off after the timer goes off, not the remedy for the OP but it will turn off the lights for pics on the inside of the car.
Just remember to open it before you close the door.

I'm in process of wiring a switch into my dome light to remedy this problem. I also hate dome lights coming on at night. From what I've read the wire you need to cut into to break the circuit is the gray-purple wire when you pull the dome assembly off. I will confirm this with a multimeter tomorrow
