Yup, I think it hit me this spring when the car shows started up. It still work for that complete black look, but that's getting old too. I like color and seeing beautiful paint. Also, I sick of seeing slammed cars. Especially the ones that are all cambered out, like the IRS is shot lol. You gotta go with what you like and not what other peeps like, but still wish the trends would change lol.
Where I'm at, you rarely see a stock setup. I'm the only one I know personally with a Mustang who still has my stock suspension. I wouldn't mind dropping it a little, like an inch, but I want to do it all at once; spring, shocks/struts, etc. It's not high on my list because of that I suppose. Not sure which age group started slamming cars, but I know it wasn't mine lol.
but really though, I agree with all your points. Hence why my car is such.
To the OP, in the end, it's all personal preference. When it comes to discussing whether something "looks good or not", you will get a myriad of responses, none of which are wrong, none of which are right. It's a whole can of worms, ending with argument after argument. Look at how the 2015 threads end up. LOL. I stay away from those threads now. Some major trolls there.
So, in my "opinion", I don't like black wheels. Gunmetal or dark tinted wheels (mine) are my favorite.

Depending on a Mustang's color, chrome wheels can really work. Red and white work well in my opinion, and after seeing pics of Cdivisons wife's GT 'vert, chrome wheels look great on GHIG.
I strongly considered chrome before I got the aluminum & black Boss wheels for my black GT, and maybe I'll change my mind and go chrome when it comes time for a set of CS40's. That's down the road.
My last name ends in a vowel, so it's in my DNA to like shiny things.

The color definitely has a lot to do with it. I personally think chrome/shiny wheels look bad on an all black car, unless there are stripes to balance it out aesthetically. When I get new wheels they are either going to be black or a dark brushed metal.

They look good on some cars, others not so much, just like 20 inch rims. They look good on a car designed for them but keep them off of a stock 1994 Impala SS, Crown Vic, or any Mustang or GM F-body made before 2005. And anything I have seen above a 20 just looks stupid.

I bought black wheels to contrast with the gb paint before I even got the car, thinking they'd look infinitely better than the "silver sparkle" OEM wheels (or whatever they're called). I actually like the OEM wheels about the same as the ones I bought because I've found that black wheels get lost in the tire, which I think is the OP's issue (though I think he's overstating it). I've since settled on gunmetal CF5s, mainly because they stand out from the tire.

I've been sick of black wheels since 2002. I just don't get it. Especially the flat black wheels. Looks like steel wheels with missing hubcaps. The GT500 black wheels are bad IMO as well. Never understood why this has been such a craze.

Black, Gunmetal, silver, chrome, gold and polished wheels have all been in and out of popularity at one point or another in auto history.
On different cars I have tried various shades all the way from machined polished, to silver, gunmetal and black. At this point I just shoot for what I like and do my best to respect others for their auto style choices(as long as their tasteful).
