Are superchips really super?

Automobile manufacturers must compete in a marketplace where fuel consumption, horsepower and torque are big factors, but they must also comply with emissions and other regulations. To meet these demands modern cars are controlled by computers. The computer, known as an ECU (Engine Control Unit), controls all engine settings like the air/fuel mixture, ignition timing and idle speed. A quick and easy way to do this and upgrade your vehicle’s performance is with a “superchip”, also known as an aftermarket performance chip. Aftermarket performance chips are made to adjust parameters to increase engine power and torque. The effects of the superchip can be easily reversed just by plugging it into the ECU and choosing the reset option, which will cause the ECU to revert to the factory settings. Overall, upgrading your ECU settings with a superchip is a fairly simple and low cost alternative for the everyday auto enthusiast.

Select your year model, check prices and choose superchips here: Performance Chips & Programmers at CARiD.com

SUPERCHIPS® - SCR in-cabin tuner

BULLY DOG® - WatchDog™ Monitor

SCT Performance® - Livewire TS Performance Programmer & Monitor

DiabloSport® - Trinity Programmer

HYPERTECH® - Max Energy Programmer

Have any of you tried them and what is your opinion on this products?

@car id: Please don't take this the wrong way, but I would like to call "BS" on the "hype" portion of the "ad" posts, I don't need to know that these things are called "super chips" and while they are fun and flashy, I don't care for the "ooooh SHINY" complex either, what I want to see is the technical data, charts, dyno charts and print outs, and other various forms of technical data that can be acquired, comparison of the final results vs stock, and a list of each mod installed with what type of car being used for the test and a fair testing done with each, heck I would even be happy to take a bunch of these put them on my stock ride and test them my self and review these things, I am a technical minded person that wants to look at these things from an engineering point of view, not the usual "oh look at the shiny box" point of view!

I feel taking a bone stock ride like mine and using it to test these things would be a true test of any "gains" (if any) that these things could give, same goes for benefits!

SIDE NOTE: whats with the whole notion of these things being "superchips"??? im sorry but these arn't really super anything, granted they have tunes in them, but what is in reality happening is your "flashing" the on board ECU with NEW data (programme) that is modified and tweaked to give performance gains/benefits and cause the ECU to behave differently then what it might do in a stock from the factory tune...again i am looking at this from a computer programmers point of view that likes to look at all pertinent data in this type of matter!!

Here is a dyno chart for Superchips Flashpaq Tuner, used on 2011 F150 Ecoboost:

For the Edge Evolution CS/CTS Programmer unfortunately, we don't have any dyno charts. But here are Power Levels of this tuner:

Level 1: 40 Horsepower - 80 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 2: 60 Horsepower - 140 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 3: 80 Horsepower - 180 Foot Pounds of Torque

Ford 1999-2003 7.3L Powerstroke
Level 0: Stock
Level 1: 60 Horsepower - 100 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 2: 80 Horsepower - 160 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 3: 100 Horsepower - 200 Foot Pounds of Torque

Ford 2003-2007 6.0L Powerstroke
Level 0: Stock
Level 1: 20 Horsepower - 80 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 2: 60 Horsepower - 100 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 3: 80 Horsepower - 150 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 4: 100 Horsepower - 200 Foot Pounds of Torque

Ford 2008-2010 6.4L Powerstroke
Level 0: Stock
Level 1: 25 Horsepower - 55 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 2: 40 Horsepower - 75 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 3: 60 Horsepower - 130 Foot Pounds of Torque
Level 4: 100 Horsepower - 200 Foot Pounds of Torque

Ford 2011-2012 6.7L Powerstroke
Level 0: Stock
Peak to Peak Gains:
Level 3 – 80 HP 180 tq
Level 2 – 65 HP 150 tq
Level 1 – No added power. Optimizes stock tuning with custom options feature to run smoother

Max Gains:
Level 3 – 157 HP, 180 max lbs-ft TQ
Level 2 – 141 max HP, +148 max lbs-ft TQ

That dyno chart is just from pluging in a tune and no other mods?? I'm looking for a dyno chart that would show the results on my 06 gt with no mods. Just plug it in and go play. What kind of hp and tq would I gain from the Superchips?

They are, in fact, "Superchips"...because it's a brand name.

Those gains on forced induction truck engines mean absolutely nothing. You will not get similar results at all on an NA 4.6 or 5.0

It's just a device to put a tune on a car. Same as SCT, Diablo, etc. but no one uses them in the Mustang world. It's all SCT. Gains will be the same.

The opposite is true in the truck world. The Superchips name likely stems from how things used to be done. Instead of flashing the PCM, a separate "chip" would piggyback.

I know it is a brand name of a certain product but to me that does not make every unit out there a "superchip" to me these are just "programmers", think about it, what your essentally doing is programming your car with a new tune

as for a post above, I agree I want to see dyno charts and things like that!! Heck I would even be willing to take some of these to to my local dyno place and test them on my stock mustang....I am interested in the dyno info!
