2012 BOSS 302 Steering Wheel modded onto a 2006 GT

Apparently,,, I break steering wheels a lot. My 2006 GT has 66,000 and I just installed my 3rd steering wheel.

When I broke the 1st one I thought, "great time to upgrade" so I got the leather wrapped wheel from the Shelby GT500. And that was a great wheel,,, until it broke last month.

Upon inspection both steering wheels broke in exactly the same place. The plastic in that area of the wheel (9 o'clock spoke) is thin and weak and the aluminum is also pretty minimal. I'll try to upload pics. I'll also take my share of the responsibility for these breaks as I "used to have" a habit of pushing/pulling on the 9 o'clock side of the wheel while getting in/out of the car. Lesson learned,,, don't touch the wheel when you get in & out of the car.

Anyhow,,, while I was doing my research for a new wheel (because they're expensive) I stumbled across this article from a guy that got a 2012 BOSS 302 Alcantara Wrapped wheel and he grafted it onto his 2005 GT.

themustangsource.com/forums/f692/boss-302-steering-wheel-into-05-gt-501629/

I was pretty uncomfortable about the idea of chopping up a brand new wiring harness so I could get my cruise control to work. That other article go into depth on how to get the music controls to work with an aftermarket sound system but I could care less about all that. Actually, to my relief, the wiring for the cruise control is pretty simple. I dropped about $30 at Home Depot on a butane soldering torch, heat shrink sleeves, a bottle of butane, and some wiring solder. It all came together nicely and looked like it was done at the factory. And I have "zero" experience doing anything like this.

I did talk to my parts guy at the local Ford dealership and to a couple of tech guys from online parts retailers that sold the 2012 BOSS 302 steering wheel. They all told me the same thing,,, "You cannot put a 2012 BOSS 302 steering wheel on your 2006 Mustang GT. The air bag won't fit. The cruise control won't work. And the clock spring is different." They were all wrong on all points. The air bag fit perfectly. The horn and cruise control work perfectly. And the wheel fit exactly the same as my 2006 version.

I couldn't be happier with this modification. Mostly because I took my time and did all the work myself. It looks GREAT and the alcantara feels amazing compared to the last 2 leather wrapped wheels I had.

Don't be afraid to make this mod if you're in the market for a new steering wheel. Plus,,, the 2012 BOSS 302 steering wheel is less expensive than any other steering wheel you can find for 2005-2012 mustangs. I got mine from PartsCheap.com for $281.40. That was the cheapest one I could find and the shipping was free. Please do not tell me if you can find one cheaper,,, I hate it when I over pay. But all the Shelby and stock OEM replacement wheels I could find were in the $400 and up range. Here's the link to where I got mine...

BTW,,, I just discovered that since I bout my 2012 BOSS 302 steering wheel the price has increased to $313.96 so,,, sorry. I guess I got lucky on that one. But it's still totally worth it.

you know they were just saying it wont work to either get you to buy a Ford part from them or they haven't messed with the Mustang enough (or the Mustang Source heard)

nice work, now would you kindly stop breaking the steering wheels? The Mustang isn't liking that....
