Bog and Bang today

Today, I was heading into town to get some new alternator brushes; while I was driving down the highway like I usually do. I accelerated hard in second gear and it pulled hard then all of a sudden the pulling stopped completely and it bogged out, then a very very very loud, single backfire went BANG! Scared I threw it into third gear and cautiously continued down the road.

I have a 1989 EFI 5.0L HO. Not sure what this could have been, it's like it completely starved for fuel then the huge backfire, fuel filter is pretty new.

Coil failure?
I remember as a kid doing that on purpose - turn the ignition off and coast for a bit, then turn it back on and "bang".

When it fired back up that is when you heard the bang. It was all the unburned fuel in your exhaust system exploding.
