Ford Unveils the Newly-Refreshed 2018 Mustang Convertible

By now we’ve all seen the new, facelifted Mustang coupe, after making a huge splash at Detroit’s North American International Auto Show. The big news with the 2018 Mustang Convertible is largely the same.

The V6 has been dropped from the lineup. The automatic transmission is Ford’s new 10-speed (jointly developed with GM). A 12″ all-digital instrument cluster and a new magnetic ride suspension will also be available. Additionally, Ford is migrating what they’re calling a “sleeker design” to the drop-top version. That’s what you see here.

The new Mustang Convertible sees the same front and rear fascia updates that the coupe received. But the convertible somehow manages to take those aggressive updates in stride. It looks more cohesive in the process.

Without a rearward-focused roof-line to contrast with the abrupt forward-focused downward slope of the nose cone, the convertible makes better use of that dynamic look. It directs your eyes toward the front of the car. You’re no longer conflicted between the directionality of the design, as you may be with the fixed-roof version. The coupe looks a tad frumpy and discombobulated, but with the removal of the roof, the design is downright handsome. At the back of the car, the “bustle” abruptly ends with a cohesive, flat rear-deck. It works far better than a Camaro Convertible.

No matter what you think of this new Mustang design, one thing is certain: this convertible will be quite popular with the Southern California car rental companies. That’s a tradition that will never die.
