Burnout contests probably don’t make much sense to the non gear-head, and we can’t blame them for not completely understanding a competition to see who can obliterate their rear tires for the longest amount of time. Even so, burnouts are just as much part of drag racing as just about anything, and who doesn’t enjoy seeing a muscle car conjure up a nice cloud of shredded tires?

Sometimes, though, a burnout produces more than just smoke. At the 4th annual NMRA/NMCA All Star Nationals in Commerce, Georgia last month one Mustang owner found out what happens when you burn too much of your tires. After more than 25 seconds of tearing up the pavement the rear tires of the Mustang give way and burst into flames. Fortunately the safety crew at the drag strip is close by, and the flames aren’t able to spread anywhere else on the car.

Vaughn Gittin Jr. burst onto the Mustang aftermarket scene at the 2009 SEMA Show with the debut of the carbon fiber Mustang RTR-C. While the car was certainly impressive, it wasn’t really something that Gittin could market to the public thanks to its $135,000 price tag. Of course, that’s where the Mustang RTR comes in. Featuring an attractive body kit and graphics package, gorgeous 19-inch wheels and a few performance items Ford Racing, the Mustang RTR represented a relatively affordable turnkey tuning package that could be purchased and serviced at authorized Ford dealerships.

Now with the debut of the 2013 Ford Mustang, Vaughn Gittin Jr. is set to unveil the second generation Mustang RTR. While official details have yet to be announced, it looks like the new car will maintain a similar design theme to the original. For the first time the RTR package will be available on the Mustang V6, and a supercharger system from Ford Racing will also likely be an option.

You can see the renderings of the 2013 Ford Mustang RTR below, and stay tuned for official details on the car later this week.

On paper the 2013 Mustang Boss 302 may not look like it’s much different than the 2012 model, and in all honesty it’s the truth. The exterior design has been tweaked, the graphics package changed, and a few options have been added to the interior. Even so, out of all the 2013 Mustang lineup the Boss 302 sets itself apart visually the most of any model from the previous year. This was no more evident when we had the opportunity to check out a School Bus Yellow Boss 302 at Galpin Ford this past week.

The first thing that caught our eye was the distinct differences between the graphics package on the standard Boss 302 compared to the one on the Laguna Seca model. If you compared the Boss 302 pictured above with the Laguna Seca that debuted at the L.A. Auto Show back in November you’ll easily be able to spot the differences between the two. Essentially, the hockey stick graphic on the side of the standard Boss 302 extends onto the hood, joining up with the center stripe to give the appearance of a triple stripe.

The Boss 302 also gave us our first opportunity to take a closer look at the Track Apps and Gauge Mode features. While we weren’t able to use any of them out on the road, we were impressed at how intuitive the system is and easy to was to flip through the menu items. It’s a feature we’d have a hard time leaving out on the order form if we were buying a 2013 Mustang.

At first the comparison might seem like a strange one. The Mustang is a V6 300hp heavyweight. On the other hand, Subaru’s BRZ is a feather light, 200 hp scalpel on wheels. At their core though, they’re both through-and-through sports cars that offer an accessible amount of performance through wildly different philosophies. Through that lens, putting them both on a California canyon road suddenly makes a lot more sense.

MotorTrend does exactly that in this video. They’re not testing to see which car is faster or quicker; that honor goes to the Mustang. Instead, they’re asking which car is the better drivers car. Find out what they think in the video below.

Seventeen year-old Weston Masset flipped his Mustang on the curvy canyon roads of Malibu, California last week. Lucky for him, Dempsey heard the crash from his home nearby and came running to rescue with crowbar and fire extinguisher in hand. Dempsey helped remove Masset from the car and stayed with him until the paramedics arrived.

Even in the midst of a concussion and eye injury, Masset was able to recognize the star and asked “Are you famous?”

Dempsey, star of medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy”, replied “I’m a doctor.”

Despite having a more-than-respectable 305 horsepower and 280 lb-ft torque from the factory, V6-powered Mustangs don’t get quite as much respect as their V8 siblings. The aftermarket especially doesn’t give much love to the Mustang V6, with companies mainly producing parts for the 5.0L V8, and performance shops generally use the Mustang GT as their base for project cars. Even so, we can always appreciate when someone takes the performance plunge on two less cylinders.

Out of all companies ProCharger has led the V6 charge, producing a supercharger kit that boosts the 3.7L mill to more than 475 horsepower. We’ve seen the ProCharger system prove its worth more than once, with one owner netting the first 12 second 1/4 mile, and American Muscle taking that one step further with the first 2011+ Mustang V6 in the 11s.

Now a new company, Central Florida Motorsports, has arrived on the scene and is pushing the boundaries of V6 performance thanks again to ProCharger power. After smashing the record for a 2011+ Mustang V6 back in March with a run of 11.28 seconds @ 119 mph back in March, the company’s supercharged Yellow Blaze project car improved on that further last week with a 11.20 @ 119 mph.

Sometimes it can take months for a product to come to market after it’s initially shown to the public, but that’s not the case for Shelby’s latest Mustang. After debuting the 950 horsepower 2012 Shelby 1000 at the New York Auto Show earlier this month, the company is already hard at work building the first customer car at their facility in Las Vegas, NV. The vehicle shown is actually a Shelby 1000 S/C, a track-only version of the car that is rated at an incredible 1,100 horsepower thanks to longtube headers, race fuel and increased boost from the massive 3.6L Kenne Bell supercharger.

As you can see from the photos below, the modifications required to create a Shelby 1000 are so extensive that the entire drivetrain and front suspension have to be completely removed from the vehicle and assembled separately. In addition to the new engine components, the car is also scheduled to get larger front and rear brakes, an all new suspension system, a 9-inch rear end and more.

Check out the photos of the first Shelby 1000 under construction in the gallery below.
