Automobile Tests Real-World Efficiency of Mustang EcoBoost Versus GT

Mustang EcoBoost Comparison

Ah, finally… a more thorough real-world take on the EcoBoost Mustang that gives us a better sense of exactly how well Ford’s new four-banger measures up to the more powerful GT model.

This latest bit of insight comes courtesy of our friends at Automobile Magazine, who put the 310-horsepower 2.3-liter model up against the 435-HP V8 Mustang on a 109.4-mile loop of mixed highway and back-road driving.

As you probably guessed, the four-cylinder Mustang did far better when it comes to fuel efficiency. But exactly how much better seems to have even caught the team at Automobile a little off guard.

With a combined EPA listing at 25 mpg, the four-cylinder EcoBoost model averaged 29.5 mpg in the Automobile test, compared to the GT’s 22.3 mpg. That said, the GT also scored better than its combined EPA listing of 19 mpg in the mixed road performance review.

However, with a base price that’s $6,750 less than the $33,295 Mustang GT, Automobile seems to suggest that the four-cylinder might be the best bang for the buck overall. What do you think?
